What makes a good mortgage broker? We looked at our Google reviews to find out
When looking for a mortgage broker, most people understandably want to know they're getting a good mortgage deal. After all, even a small difference in interest rate can have a significant impact on your monthly payments and the overall cost of your mortgage.
Finding the right mortgage at a competitive rate is a fundamental part of what we do at DLi Mortgages, but we recently took some time to look through the Google reviews our clients have left us, and something interesting stood out.

83% of our Google reviews don't mention mortgage rates or deals at all
Instead, our clients tend to talk about the service they've received, the communication throughout the process, having someone available to answer questions, and the reassurance of knowing they have support when they need it.
This reinforced what we already suspected about what people value when working with a mortgage broker, particularly when buying a home can involve so much more than arranging the mortgage itself.
Finding the right mortgage is only part of the process
Of course, getting a competitive mortgage rate matters. It's one of the main reasons people come to us, and something we spend a lot of time working on behind the scenes. We search across the mortgage market to find suitable options based on each client's circumstances, taking into account far more than just the headline interest rate.
But the mortgage itself is only one of the parts of buying a property. There's finding the right home, understanding what you can afford, negotiating an offer, dealing with solicitors and estate agents, arranging surveys and navigating any unexpected issues that come up along the way.
For someone buying their first home, much of this will be completely unfamiliar. Even for people who have moved several times before, the process can still be complicated and stressful. And this is where we think having the right support can make a real difference.
Communication makes a big difference
One of the most common themes across our reviews is communication. Clients regularly mention how quickly we respond to questions, how we keep them updated and how easy it is to get hold of us.
We know that when you're buying a home, you don't necessarily want to wait several days for an email response, particularly when you're worried about something or need to make a decision.
That's why we make ourselves available by phone, email, WhatsApp and video call, including appointments outside normal working hours. We also keep clients informed without them having to chase for updates.
As one of our clients, Ellie, explained in her review:
"They were always quick to respond to any questions or concerns, which made what can be a stressful process feel much easier - providing the option of being able to communicate over WhatsApp instead of email made it feel more personable and made it easier to communicate!"
It's a relatively simple part of the service, but one that clearly makes a difference to people's experience.
Making mortgages easier to understand
Another recurring theme is the importance of explaining things clearly. Mortgages can be complicated, particularly when you're dealing with affordability calculations, different types of interest rates, lender criteria and unfamiliar terminology.
We work with mortgages every day, but we appreciate that our clients don't. We want people to understand the advice we're giving, the options available to them and why we're recommending a particular mortgage. That means taking the time to explain things properly, answering questions and avoiding unnecessary jargon.
As Tom explained following his remortgage:
"Dave was a calm and reassuring source of knowledge throughout the process, cutting through mortgage provider jargon and explaining everything in plain English so that we could understand all of our options."
We think that's particularly important because a mortgage is likely to be one of the largest financial commitments you'll make. You should feel comfortable with the decisions you're making, rather than simply being told which product to take.
Helping to take the stress out of moving home
Something else that comes through strongly in our reviews is how much clients value reassurance and support. Buying a property can be an emotional experience. There are often tight deadlines, large sums of money involved and plenty of things outside your control.
Sometimes a mortgage application is straightforward. Other times there might be issues with credit history, self-employed income, a property valuation or something that comes up during the conveyancing process.
We can't promise there won't be complications, but we can help clients understand what's happening, what their options are and what needs to happen next.
One review particularly stood out to us:
"Throughout what has been an incredibly stressful and emotional process for me, he has been patient, supportive and always willing to help. He has made me feel like I wasn't alone in this, and that means more to me than I can put into words."
Feedback like this means a lot to us, because it's exactly the type of support we want to provide.
Going beyond arranging the mortgage
One of the things we particularly enjoy about our work is being involved in the wider homebuying process. Although our main responsibility is arranging mortgage and protection advice, we often find ourselves helping clients with questions and decisions that sit outside the mortgage application.
That might mean talking through the affordability of a particular property, discussing an offer, helping clients understand a survey, or speaking with estate agents and solicitors to help keep things moving.
We don't replace the work of solicitors, surveyors or other professionals, but we can help clients understand the process and point them in the right direction when something needs attention.
Jenny described this particularly well in her review:
"From the initial meeting where he offered advice without the jargon, to sharing information on properties we were viewing, and then guidance on how to pitch our offer, Dave has been a constant reassuring point of contact throughout our property search."
She went on to say:
"Dave is friendly and professional and has gone way above the typical duties of a mortgage broker in supporting us."
We appreciate that clients aren't just arranging a mortgage. They're buying a home, often making significant decisions about their finances and their future. Being able to help with the wider process is something we feel adds real value.
A personal service from Dave and Chantelle
DLi Mortgages is a small, independent mortgage brokerage, and we see that as one of our strengths. When you work with us, you're dealing directly with the people looking after your mortgage.
Dave provides the mortgage and protection advice, while Chantelle helps with the administration, communication and progression of cases, including liaising with solicitors and estate agents.
We get to know our clients and their circumstances, and we want them to feel comfortable coming to us with questions, however small they might seem.
One of our clients summed up their experience of working with us both:
"What really stood out was the personal service. Dave and Chantelle clearly care about their clients and went above and beyond to support us, keeping us informed and reassured every step of the way."
We know there are plenty of mortgage brokers to choose from, so having clients take the time to leave feedback like this is something we really appreciate.

Is using a mortgage broker worth it?
It's a fair question, particularly when some lenders allow customers to apply for mortgages directly. A mortgage broker can help you understand which lenders and products are suitable for your circumstances, compare your options and manage the application process.
But as our reviews demonstrate, there's also value in having someone to speak to when you're unsure about something, someone who understands your circumstances and someone who can help you navigate the wider process.
One client, Maddie, had previously arranged a mortgage directly with a lender before deciding to use us for her next move. She explained:
"We did our mortgage ourselves directly with a lender previously and we will definitely be using Dave again due to how easy and stress free he has made the process."
We think this illustrates the difference that the right support can make.
So, what makes a good mortgage broker?
Looking back through our reviews has been an interesting exercise. We were pleased to see clients talking about competitive mortgage rates and good deals, but what stood out much more was how often they mentioned the experience of working with us.
The communication, the explanations, the reassurance and the help with things they hadn't necessarily expected a mortgage broker to be involved in.
For us, arranging a suitable mortgage at a competitive rate should be a given. It's what clients come to us to do, and something we take seriously.
But we also want people to look back on the process and feel they were well looked after, understood their options and had the support they needed along the way.
And judging by the feedback we've received, those are the things our clients remember.
